Based on training courses, influencer videos, and marketing courses, you have a pretty good sense of the projects you “should” be figuring out and implementing to get your business underway.

Although these checklists provide you with a sense of direction, the more you focus on your list, the more overwhelmed you feel about all there is to think about and get done all at once.

  • You aren’t clear what to do first.

  • You don’t have enough experience to decide what you can put off until later.

  • You realize you don’t have the skills to implement what you’ve been told to do.

  • You worry you are missing essential pieces that will sabotage your success with must-do strategies.

  • You question whether you will ever get all the pieces in place.

  • You are concerned that you aren’t seeing the results you were told to expect.

  • You feel frustrated that you aren’t moving forward fast enough.

Before too long, you start to feel behind. Every time you work on one task, you discover a cascade of other steps that need to be done before you can proceed.

When you can’t sort out where to put your focus, you start to shut down and begin to wonder if getting your business up and running is worth the stress and anxiety.

Hang in there!

First, Please Know You Are Not Alone!

Carol McClelland Fields, PhD, BCC
Business Mentor for Emerging Change Catalysts and Seasoned Change Catalysts

I’ve been hearing and seeing some form of this frustration since I started training coaches in 2004.

I’ve always thought that there had to be a better way to help new professionals get their business off the ground without causing so much angst and frustration.

I devoted myself to discovering what was at the heart of this all-too-common pattern.

Second, Neither You nor Your Business Are at Fault

What I discovered is that there is something amiss in the business development system that we’ve all been taught!

Although we are told time and time again that a business owner must take certain steps to succeed, I’ve seen firsthand – within my own business, with my colleagues, and with my clients – that traditional Mainstream business strategies don’t work for everyone.

The business checklists you’ve been given were created by successful entrepreneurs to help seasoned entrepreneurs take their existing business to the next level.

Expecting yourself to jump through the same hoops as a seasoned business owner – at an accelerated pace that’s required to keep up with more experienced participants – puts you under a lot of pressure!

Using this list to guide your entry into entrepreneurship will grind you down.

At this emergent stage of your business, you aren’t ready to jump into marketing your business. You just don’t have the clarity, confidence, or infrastructure that are required to implement the Mainstream tasks and strategies that are likely on your current to-do list.

There Is Another Path Forward!

Based on my own difficult experiences with the Mainstream Approach, I realized that during the emergent phases of my business, I needed to prepare a grounded foundation before I felt comfortable sharing my work with potential clients.

I created a gentle and encouraging path, I call the Organic Way, to support Emerging Change Catalysts in developing their work and growing their business.

  • This new path is simpler! There are fewer steps to take to create a viable business framework to support your initial paying clients.

  • There’s a natural order to the tasks. When you do the tasks in order, they build, one on top of the other, to increase your momentum and support your success.

This new way changes how we approach our business as well.

  • Rather than giving most of our focus to marketing, we shift our emphasis to creating a grounded foundation for your business before you start sharing your work. This shift supports you in developing confidence in your work with clients, your skills, and your vision of your business first, which makes it much easier to share your work when the time is right.

  • Rather than getting everything ready for a grand opening or big countdown launch, we take a more natural approach to growing your business. Taking small, incremental steps gives you the opportunity to confirm that you are on the right track and to verify that your work with clients creates the results you intended. By developing this inner sense of clarity, you are able to move forward more confidently on a consistent basis.

Focusing on the tasks that you are ready to act on enhances your success and your results. The clearer you are about the business you want to grow, the stronger your foundation, and the more confident you feel, the easier it will be to invite paying clients to work with you.

Rethink Your Start-Up Plan

Rather than reel off a whole new to-do list for you to follow, I want to show you why you’ve struggled to bring your business to life. When you understand what’s been at the heart of your struggle, a healing dynamic will begin to unfold. You’ll be able to reclaim your place at the helm of your business again!

In this interactive workshop, you’ll reframe your personal start-up plan to match where you are on your business journey so that you experience more ease and joy as you start your business!

In Part 1 of the workshop, I’ll share the Top Five Tasks that Emerging Change Catalysts struggle with most. By the end of this discussion, you’ll have an entirely different perspective of what you need to put in place to create a new business. By reorienting your attention to the projects that are most important to you right now, you’ll make more progress you’ll feel good about.

In Part 2 of the workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to share what’s frustrating you about starting your new business. With some gentle mentoring questions and personalized comments, I’ll help you understand what’s not working about your task and help you see where to focus your attention to create the best results. (After you register for the workshop, I’ll give you a couple of prompts to help you clarify your thoughts prior to the workshop.)

Enhance Your Progress

When you feel more aligned with the tasks at hand, it will be easier to feel motivated and in sync with your vision to create a viable business using your skills as a Change Catalyst.

When I support my clients and students in reframing their start-up plan, they tell me how relieved, focused, and re-energized they feel. Their new perspective makes them excited to get back to growing their business — organically!
